A girl of Matia Sahi village under Kukudakhandi block in Ganjam district on Tuesday attempted suicide by consuming phenyl after her marriage scheduled to be held in February was called off. The girl was later rushed to the MKCG Medial College Hospital here and is currently undergoing treatment. “Two people defamed the girl with rumours about her in front of her would-be husband, following which her wedding was cancelled. Not being able to resist the shock, she attempted to take the extreme step,” informed he relatives. It is pertinent to mention here that the rumour mongers had also earlier spread canards about girl’s elder sister and broken her marriage.
