At a meeting held on Wednesday under the chairmanship of Development Commissioner R Balakrishnan, it was decided that the State Government would file an application with the Geographic Indication (GI) Registry for ‘Odishara Rasagola’.
The MSME, Science & Technology and law Secretaries and the Director of Industries were present at the meeting.
It was noted that ‘Banglar Rasogolla’ has got the GI tag on an application filed by the West Bengal Government and this only provides GI tag to the Banglar Rasogolla specific to West Bengal. GI is a name or sign used on certain products, which correspond to specific geographical locations or origins.
It was also argued that the GI for Banglar Rasogolla in no way affects the claim for GI registration of Odishar Rasogolla. The Bengal and Odisha variants of this sweetmeat are different in colour, texture, taste, juice content and method of manufacturing. The Odishara Rasagola is softer and light brown in colour whereas Bangalar Rasogolla is white and cream in colour.
The syrups used in both the variants are also different.
