Postal services in entire Sundargarh district remained severely affected due to a nationwide strike by Gramin Dak Sevaks which has entered its 15th day on Tuesday.
Even if senior officials of the Postal Department in Sundargarh admit that the demands of GDSs are genuine but opined that the strike should be done in a peaceful way and should be limited only to rural areas.
But the GDSs are also continuing the strike and forcing many post offices to shut down.
The countrywide strike started on May 22 against the non-implementation of the 7th Pay Commission's recommendations. There are around 3 lakh 'Dak Sevaks' across the country who act as delivery agents at rural post offices.
According to sources, there are around 700 GDSs in Sundargarh district and around 6,000 GDSs in Odisha. People are not getting their urgent and necessary documents even if they are lying in different post offices undelivered.
“We will continue the strike till our demands are met,” said All India GDS union president Parsuram Das.
“Since GDS getting meager salary, their demand is genuine but they should not completely bring the postal department to a grinding halt,” said Senior Superintendent Post Sundargarh MK Nayak.
