Garbage dump hits city airport boundary

The boundary of the Biju Patnaik International Airport here has turned a place for throwing the wastes and garbage, which is likely to pose problems for flights.

Sources said the airport boundary constructed near the road from Siripur to Jagamara where hundreds of people gather in evening to see the landing and takeoff scenes of the flights seems to be the most unclean spot in Bhubaneswar, which has been rated as the Smartest City in the country.

In view of the crowd in the area, small businessmen have opened stalls to sell food items. The visitors after consuming food are throwing the garbage to the boundary. Even the shop owners make the area dirty.

People are found eating food sitting on the airport boundary wall as it is constructed at a low level. Even, there is no provision of light by the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) on the road, for which people find the boundary a suitable place for throwing the garbage.

Drunkards are also using the boundary as a sitting place to consume liquor, making the place dirtier, the sources added.

The place also witnesses dogs, cows and crows, which come here in numbers being allured of the garbage for food.

For smooth operation of the flights, the BMC and the airport authorities are evicting the shops and cutting big trees in the airport areas. However, they are paying little attention to this area, and it could pose a big threat to the flight operations in near future, the sources said.
