Ganjam woman attack: NHRC registers case

Published on:

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) registered a case on the brutal murder of a woman whose daughters faced eve teasing and harassment in Polasara area of Ganjam district.

Acting on a complaint of Supreme Court lawyer and rights activist Radhakanta Tripathy, the apex rights panel registered the case.

On August 21 last, Kamala Swain, mother of two teen-aged girls, namely Barsha Swain and liza Swain, was killed by miscreants against whom she had lodged a police case over eve-teasing of her daughter. The deceased was severely attacked when she sought help from the villagers and ran towards her husband who was working in a paddy field in Bhabarada village.

The police failed to ensure safety to the victim girls’ family. The daughters of the entire family are now under severe threat. When one of the girls went to the police station for registering the FIR at Polasara, the police threatened the girl to rape her in case she persists for registering the case. The main accused has been roaming freely with the blessing of the local police.

Negligence and failure of the police and Government authorities in acting over the issue pose serious question of human rights, Tripathy alleged and requested the NHRC to investigate the case, direct the DGP, Odisha and the Women and Child Development Secretary to act immediately and compensate the family with `10 lakh.
