Ganjam to get 36 roads under MMSY first phase

In the first phase of Mukhya Mantri Sadak Yojana (MMSY), three roads will be constructed in each of the 12 Assembly constituencies in Ganjam district, except Brahmapur. Priority will be given to those villages which are not included under “Pradhanmantri Sadak Yojana” (PMSY). This scheme would also include those roads which are defunct and in bad condition, but inadvertently have been shown on record as good. This was decided in the District Committee meeting held at Chatrapur on Friday in which district Collector Premchand Choudhury presided.

On the pretext of township and urban area, Brahmapur Assembly segment has been excluded from the scheme which irked the citizens of the silk city. However, the committee unanimously decided to include Brahmapur under the scheme and the recommendation will be sent to the State Government for approval soon, sources said.

Some senior citizens and social organisations, however, have raised questions as to how the MlAs could submit the list of proposed roads to be constructed in their respective Assembly segments without giving due notice through media and eliciting public opinion in the matter. For instance, there is neither a concrete road nor a drain to Kalinga Vihar connecting the main road at Dura-Pathara junction (under Gopalpur Assembly constituency) causing inconvenience to the local public as well as the vehicular movement in the area.

Similarly, there is a demand from the residents of Gandhinagar that, the condition of 200-meter- long DAV School road and 150- meter- long road facing Roland +2 College in Gandhinagar 3rd line Extension under Brahmapur Assembly segment are in extremely bad condition even though the area is a posh locality.

Notably, the Mukhyamantri Sadak Yojana (MMSY) was formulated for implementation in the State from the current financial year with Rs150 crore allotted for the scheme. An allocation of Rs4,678.88 crore has been made to the Rural Development Department for the roads.
