Ganjam lawyers to oppose bail for theft, loot accused

In view of the increasing incidents of theft and loot in Brahmapur headquarters town, the Ganjam Bar Association has taken a decision to strongly oppose bail petitions of the accused involved in the cases, said Ganjam Bar Association joint secretaries Sitanshu Sekhar Panda and Sanjib Kumar Patra.

Notably, the incidents of theft and loot have increased manifolds during last few years in Brahmapur, posing a serious threat to security of the denizens. Intellectuals who held ineffective policing responsible for such rising crimes, however, hailed the decision of the Ganjam Bar Association.

“If the advocates unitedly oppose the bail petitions of the accused, the rate of crimes would certainly come down,” hoped Sintansu Sekhar Panda, a local.

It is observed that after the criminals are released on bail, they again resort to stealing and loot disturbing the peace of the residents. Hence, not cooperating with them in getting bail will go a long way in preventing the crimes.

It may be recalled here that, four months back, a gang of dacoits had looted fifteen tolas of gold from the house of an advocate Ranjan Nahak. Similarly, two days back, taking the advantage of absence of house owners at home, burglars looted valuables worth Rs 6 lakh, including gold, silver and cash, from the house former joint secretary of Ganjam Bar Association Subash Chandra Patra at Jyotinagar (6th line). Another case of loot took place on last Wednesday at Bhabanagar first line, where Rajanikanta Padhi and his wife were robbed of valuables and ornaments worth several lakhs of rupees.

Ironically, in most of the cases, the police have remained clueless, sources said.
