The number of Covid-19 positive cases in Ganjam district crossed the 5,000-mark and reached the figure of 5,098 with 231 fresh cases detected from different parts of the district during the last 24 hours.

The district’s Covid death toll increased to 50 with two more deaths detected during the period.

Reporting three-digit positives, most of the time over 200 cases, every day since July 1, Ganjam’s share in the State’s Covid tally has increased to 31.64 per cent. Ganjam tops among all districts in terms of positives, deaths and active cases. It also tops in recoveries.

The first case in the state was reported from Bhubaneswar on March 15. After remaining as a green zone for nearly two months, Ganjam reported its first case on May 2 and in a short span of time, the tally crossed 5000-mark. So far, the southern district has reported 5098 cases and 50 COVID deaths.

The district recorded highest 320 cases on July 10. In the last 10 days, it has registered 2477 cases.

During these 10 days, the number of positive cases in Brahmapur city, which remained a green zone for two months, has increased alarmingly. The city had registered 900 positives by Thursday.

As per the information shared by the district administration, the 50 COVID deaths include seven Corona Warriors and two working journalists.

The rise in Covid positives has worried people despite many steps taken by the district administration.

Meanwhile, the administration has claimed the situation in the district is improving as 2,564 of the 3066 villages are under green zone and only 502 are under redzone.

Meanwhile, the Ganjam police have erected 12 check gates to ensure that nobody either enters or exits the district, unless urgent works. As many as 28 platoons of police have been deployed for the purpose.

The police collected fine of Rs 74,000 from 148 persons for not using masks on Thursday, informed SP Brijesh Kumar Rai.
