Gandhi-visited places to get tourism spot status

The State Government has made plans to give tourism spot status to all the places which were visited by Mahatma Gandhi during freedom movement. Tourism and Culture Minister Ashok Chandra Panda on Wednesday informed this in the State Assembly while replying to a question of BJD member Amar Prasad Satpathy and additional questions put by others.

The Minister said the Government has already given the status to some of the places visited by the Father of the Nation. He also said steps are being taken to set up a Gandhi Circuit involving certified Gandhi spots.

To a proposal of Satpathy, the Minister said the Government would reconsider a proposal to set up a Gandhi Memorial at Bairi in Jajpur district. Gandhi had on May 21, 1934 got down from a train at the Bairi station and gone to Champapur through Chhatia. Gandhiji had spent the night at Champua.

Similarly, the Minster said the Government would take steps to establish a Gandhi Circuit in Khordha before observance of 200th year of ‘Paika Bidroha’ to be observed in 2015.
