A statue of Mahatma Gandhi at the Badaghumuri Primary School under the Barachana police station in Jajpur district was found vandalised on Saturday night. The incident has evoked strong criticism in the locality.
“The statue was unveiled on October 2 (Gandhi Jayanti) in the school premises. But some unscrupulous persons beheaded the statue. On Sunday, I filed an FIR in Barachana police station and demanded stern action against the culprits,” said headmistress of the school Maneka Samal.
School management committee chairman Drulava Charana Bal had donated the statue to be installed in the school, added the headmistress. Acting on the FIR, police rushed to the school to investigate the case.
“We found the statue was beheaded by some unidentified miscreants. The investigation is on to nab the culprits,” said Jajpur SDPO Jugal Kishor Das.
