Agitating Gana Shikshaks and the police on Tuesday entered into a scuffle while the former were on their march towards the State Secretariat and the legislative Assembly to press their demands.
The teachers under the aegis of the Odisha Gana Shikshak Mahasangha stormed the security barricades before police prevented them from proceeding towards the Assembly, resulting in the scuffle.
Alleging that they were in the dark about the decision taken at the Inter-Ministerial Committee meeting on their demands on Monday, the teachers wanted to draw the attention of the Government towards their long pending demands.
The demands included regularisation of job after completion of six years in service and hike in salary. Police personnel, who exercised restraint, struggled to prevent the teachers from breaking the cordons.
The teachers, who have been sitting on dharna for the past two days, threatened to gherao Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s residence on Wednesday to press their demands.
“We only demand that the jobs of those who have completed six years of in service as Gana Shikshyaks be regularised. If the Chief Minister fails to take a decision today, we will continue our strike and lay siege to Naveen Nivas tomorrow,” warned an association leader.
