Police conducted a raid on a gambling den at Borriguma in Koraput district and detained 20 people late on Sunday night when gambling was on in the Nilgiri forest under the Borigumma police station. Cash of more than Rs 7 lakh and playing cards were seized from the spot during the raid. While 20 gamblers were nabbed, several others managed to elude the police dragnet. The raid was conducted following the direction of Koraput SP. “As per the direction ofKoraput SP, a special team conducted the surprise raid on the gambling den. A sum of Rs 7,83,440 was seized and 20 persons were detained. The detainees are from Nabarangpur, Jeypore and some local residents.” Notably, gambling activities continued unabated in several parts of the State despite frequent raids by police. It is is rampant particularly in Brahmapur and other districts during festive season. On June 15, a gambling den was busted near Ranipada village under Banpur police limits of Khordha district. Seven persons were arrested in connection with gambling along with seizure of cash and other valuables.
