Gajapati farmers launch canal repair works

The Gajapati Farmers’ Union finally began the Ramsagar High Canal renovation work as the district administration didn’t listen to farmers’ demand in this regard.

The canal in Ramnagar village of Gajapati district used to irrigate 1,250 acres of land for two seasonal crops every year. But the canal has been totally defunct for the last five years due to sand cover. The farmers were unable to undertake cultivation works.

The farmers’ union had repeatedly urged the district administration and the minor irrigation department to renovate the canal so that the farmers of Ramsagar can get water to cultivate their land. But they didn’t pay any heed to the union’s demand.

On Saturday, union members too requested the concerned officers to take immediate steps for canal renovation, but in vain. Dissatisfied over their callous attitude, the union undertook the renovation work on ots own on Sunday. As the district administration and minor irrigation officials didn’t take any step despite our repeated requests, we have decided to renovate the canal. It is essential for us as our area has witnessed severe shortage of rain water this year,” said union president Surjya Narayana Patnaik and Edla Ramulu, Y Ramdas, M Madhav and P Venakateswar Rao in a statement.
