In view of the growing farmer suicides in the State, the Navnirman Krishak Sangathan has formed a Krishak Kalyan Panthi (farmers’ welfare fund) for immediate assistance to the families of farmers who have committed suicide due to loan burden and crop loss following scanty rainfall.
The initiative was introduced at an emergency State executive committee meeting of the farmers’ body held on October 30. More than a hundred farmers had participated in the meeting. The collected money would be given to the families of deceased farmers on November 30, the valedictory day of a two-day full-fledged executive committee meeting.
For this, the body is carrying out a fund collection campaign beginning from Diwali. The farmers’ outfit has urged everyone, including intellectuals and students to contribute as per their capacity to the Panthi to save farmers from committing suicide, said Sangathan State convenor Akshaya Kumar.
