NGO Nature Environment and Wildlife Society (NEWS) celebrated the World Food Day at Tippo village in Talcher. An awareness campaign was taken out for the farmers.

Sarapanch of Samal Panchayat and farmer Jayanta Kumar Pradhan presided over the meeting. He told to the farmers to cultivate varieties of crops in their own land in an eco friendly manner.

Addressing the meeting, Talcher Forest Ranger Bikramdev Pattanayak and social activist Prasanna Kumar Behera emphasised the need to enhance food production and reduce hunger at local level. They said that there is a need to ensure availability of food for all and reduction of hunger by promoting family farming. Efforts must be made to enhance food production without causing harm to the environment and natural ecosystem, they told, adding that farmers must have access to infrastructure, credit and functioning markets.

Notably, the World Food Day is celebrated every year on October 16 to commemorate the date of establishment of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations in 1945. This year it was observed across the world with the theme “social protection and agriculture”.
