FPI hails Ravenshaw decision for indirect polls

The Freethought Party of India (FPI) on Thursday hailed the Ravenshaw University’s (RU decision to do away with the old way of  Students’ Union elections and demanded that the Government universalise the RU decision to create conducive academic atmosphere in each college and university.

“The RU’s decision to do away with the old pattern of politics-loaded and violence-ridden Students’ Union elections to the offices of the president, vice-resident, general secretary and assistant secretary and to replace them by nine Student Councils is a welcome step,” said party general secretary B Ramchandra CST Voltaire.

He too urged the students to refuse to be “pawans” in the hands of the politicians, whether of the ruling party or of the opposition parties.

“It has been widely seen that student leaders, coming under the grip of the political parties that fund campus elections in a competitive way, have created a lot of disturbances in the campus of each and every college and university across the country. The RU’s decision will certainly encourage good and brilliant students to manage the affairs of their concerned Student Councils without any political backing,” pointed out Voltaire.
