The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the State Crime Branch (CB) on Thursday arrested a former bank manager of the State Bank of India’s (SBI) Sakhigopal branch for cheating Rs 1.17 crore by using fake documents of 51 persons for sanction of loans.

The accused bank manager was identified as Surendranath Senapati. He had allowed the sanction of loans of 51 employees impersonating as railway employees without verifying their documents which were fraudulently deposited by them.

The 51 persons had also manufactured pay slips showing themselves as employees of the railways, EOW sources said. Earlier, the EOW had arrested nine persons including one field officer and three branch managers in this connection.

Notably, the whole matter came to light after the SBI’s Bhubaneswar Regional Manager lodged a complaint with the EOW here on November 5 last year.

In his complaint, the Regional Manager had mentioned about the loan fraud which had taken place between the years 2003 and 2006 in Sakhigopal branch of the SBI. He had also given data about sanction and disbursement of 51 fake personal loans by the bank.
