Flood-like situation improves in State

The State Government on Tuesday said it is fully geared up to tackle possible floods in the State following incessant rains for the last two days.

“We are monitoring the situation and are well-prepared to meet a flood-like situation. The district Collectors have been asked to remain alert,” said Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Maheswar Mohanty.

An official in the department said all major rivers were flowing below the danger levels and there were no flood-like situations.

The average rainfall recorded on Tuesday since Monday was 28.9 mm, he added. Two districts which received an average rainfall of more than 50 mm were Jharsuguda (100.1 mm) and Jajpur (74.8 mm).

Other districts which received substantial rainfall were Cuttack, Deogarh, Bhadrak, Puri, Dhenkanal, Malkangiri and Sambalpur.

Heavy rains had wreaked havoc in many parts of the State on Monday, throwing normal life out of gear. While many bridges were washed away by floodwaters, a few approach roads collapsed in some areas crippling the road communications.

Meanwhile, the Regional Office of India Meteorological Department (IMD) here predicted heavy rainfall at a few places in some districts including Baleswar, Bhadrak, Kendrapada and Jagatsinghpur on Wednesday.
