Flood alert in 6 districts to stay till tomorrow

Published on:

Despite scant rainfall recorded in north Odisha region on Monday, the flood alert which was sounded in six districts such as Baleswar, Bhadrak, Mayurbanj, Keonjhar, Jajpur and Dhenkanal by the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) would stay till May 28 next as the local weather office warned of heavy to very heavy rain during the next 48 hours.

Even heavy rain would occur at a few places in the southern Odisha districts and the fishermen have been asked not to venture into sea during the period as the sea would remain rough, the SRC office sources said.

Though moderate rains occurred across the State during last 24 hours particularly in the northern and western parts, there was no danger of any flash flood in any of the rivers flowing in the areas. Almost all the rivers, Brahmani, Budhabalanga, Baitarani and Subarnarekha were

flowing much below the danger level, it said.

The rains across the State triggered by a low pressure in the Bay of Bengal off south Odisha and Andhra Pradesh on Sunday brought much relief to the sizzling heat wave condition that gripped the State for more than a month with mercury rising to as high as 45.8 degree Celsius.

However, Saturday’s well marked low pressure area over the central Bay of Bengal which lies over west central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal off south Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh had started weakening, the sources said.

The weather office, however, said that moderate to heavy rains or thunder shower is likely to lash at a few places over the State.

Meanwhile, confirmed sun stroke death toll in the State shot up to 23.
