Five hardcore Maoists, one from Malkangiri and four from Koraput district, surrendered before the police on Tuesday.

Ranju Kadraka, Jumbe Kadraka, Dasi Melka and Salu Pidika, who surrendered before BSF DIG Sumer Singh in Koraput, were identified as active members of the Jhanjabati area committee of the outlawed CPI(Maoist)’s Koraput-Srikakulam division. The police seized three pistols from their possession.

Sandip Madhi alias Sunil (25) who had joined in the Maoists’ group in 2006 surrendered before the police in Malkangiri. He was involved in the Nayagarh mayhem involving attack on the police armoury and other establishments there, attack on a camp of Odisha State Armed Police (OSAP) and exchange of fire at Badigata, the police said.

“The Maoist decided to give up arms due to illness and disillusionment with activities of Maoists,” said Malkangiri Superintendent of Police Akhileswar Singh, adding, “Sandip had played an active role in many violent incidents including an encounter with the police at Pujariguda.”
