An explosion at a cracker unit at Siko village under the Jankia police limits in Khordha district on Saturday claimed lives of at least five persons, including three young girls and a woman.
Besides, three persons sustained injuries in the mishap and were hospitalised.
The blast took place at the house of one Sanatan Sethi where illegal manufacturing of crackers was allegedly going on early in the morning, reports said.
The deceased were identified as Babi Sethi (40), Madhabi Sethi (8), Tikili Sethi (4), Dolly Sethi (19) and Dutee Sethi (62).
The asbestos roof of the house collapsed under the impact of the explosion.
On being informed, fire service personnel rushed to the spot and carried out a rescue operation.
