Five children rescued

Odisha police have rescued five minor children of Cuttack city from Guntur in Andhra Pradesh, sources said on Sunday.

The Commissionerate Police along with district administration officials rescued the children, who had been employed in various industrial units and as domestic helps in Guntur. The children were later handed over to their parents in Cuttack.

It may be recalled that at least 12 children reportedly went missing in phases from the Nilakantheswar slum under the Chauliaganj police limits here.

Acting on the allegations of children being sold in other States, a three-member team of the Child Welfare Committee (CWC) began investigation into the incident on Friday.

The team led by the District Child Protection Officer went to the slum and interacted with the family members of the children who were being allegedly sold.

Following this, a case was registered with the Chauliaganj police.

The children aged between seven and 15 have allegedly been trafficked to other States with the help of middlemen from the slum, reports added.
