Disappointed with the administration’s apathy towards their longstanding demand, hundreds of fishermen have excavated a riverbed for their livelihood in Baleswar district.
About 600 fishermen excavated up to 4 km of river Panchubisha for free movement of their fishing vessels in the river.
The fishermen have been fishing in the sea for years in the Bahanaga area of the coastal district. As silting in the riverbed posed hindrance in movement of trawlers sailing into the sea from jetty, the fishermen lost their livelihood.
They had approached the local administration, the MlA and the Minister from the area to help them, but their pleas yielded no result. Finally, the fishermen decided to excavate the riverbed in their own efforts.
