Power generation stopped from unit-8 of the captive power plant of the public-sector Nalco at Angul due to a major fire in the plant on Tuesday.
The fire broke out in afternoon in the 220-KV transformer at unit-8 of the plant that resulted in damage of machineries worth crores of rupees.
After getting information, 12 teams of Fire Brigade personnel rushed to the site and took around four hours to douse the flames.
Prima facie reports indicated that short electric circuit caused the fire near the transformer that swiftly intensified. However, the exact cause behind the fire was yet to be ascertained.
Immediately after the fire, power generation from the 120-MW unit-8 was stopped.
Officials of the Factory & Boilers department rushed to the spot and began investigating into the mishap.
A Nalco Press release said power generation was normalised immediately by starting the standby unit. “As the generator transformer was old, the damage on account of the fire is marginal,” said Nalco Executive Director (Smelter & Power).
