Twin City Commissioner of Police RP Sharma has finally admitted that the police have evidence of a racket operating behind different deals for kidney sale in the twin city. He also revealed that they have already identified those suspected to be involved in the deals.
“We will take action against the culprits involved in the racket very soon,” said Sharma, adding, “Whosoever’s complicity in the case comes to the fore will be investigated.”Initially, the Commissionerate Police officials were reluctant to admit the existence of the kidney sale racket. When social organisations continued to demand a thorough probe into the case, the police took it seriously and began investigation on the basis of a complaint lodged by relatives of Padmini Nayak, whose kidney was taken by the Apollo Hospital here.
The statements made by Dr Sharma have sent shivers among the authorities of the premier private hospital, members of the authorisation committee of the State Health Department, owners of the private nursing homes involved in the racket and middlemen, said sources. Two things, the false income certificate of Padmini’s husband and absconding of three suspected persons involved in the case, compelled the police to think deeply into the allegations. These two clues helped the investigating team believe in the existence of a racket in the twin city, said the sources.
However, the fact that no arrests have been made even after 11 days of the incident of the alleged sale of Padmini’s kidney gives credence to the assumption that the police are under pressure because of the possible involvement of some bigwigs in the case.
