The Puri police on Sunday arrested six persons and forwarded them to court in connection with selling of a 24-day-old child in Rendhapokhari of Patpur mouza under Nimapada police station limits.

According to reports, Trinath Nayak and Sulochana Nayak originally hailing from Sadhangipalli in Belaguntha block in Ganjam district are staying in a Government land near a pond in Redhapokhari over last few years. They have three sons and a daughter. Trinath ekes out his livelihood by rickshaw pulling. His paltry income hardly suffices to meet the family’s necessities.

A few days ago, Sulochana gave birth to a fifth male child and probably, though heart-rending, it was chance to make some money for Trinath. As such, desperate Trinath, with the help of a mediator, sold his 24-day-old son to Biranchi Das and Kandambani Das of Bodhei village in Nimapada for Rs15,000 on Friday. The resistance and howling of Sulochana made no difference.

Following a complaint of Sulochana, police rounded off Trinath, buyer Biranchi, Kadambini, their son-in-law, daughter and mediator Bijay Nayak on Sunday and forwarded them to court.Earlier on Saturday, the district administration had rescued the child and handed over him to Sulochana, besides providing her with a financial assistance of Rs10,000.
