Farmers' body rues Govt inaction, threatens stir

With the State Government taking no proactive measures in various farmer-related issues, the Navnirman Krushak Sangathan, an organisation working for development of the farming community in the State, on Wednesday threatened to resort to an indefinite agitation from December 9 to press its demands.

Briefing mediapersons here, Sangathan State convenor Akshaya Kumar said, “We have been appealing to the Government to implement a provision of pension of `2,000 to every farmer’s family in order to ensure social security, `500 as additional bonus per quintal of paddy, a proper marketing mechanism and construction of sufficient cold storages for preservation produces and a provision of legal status to the agricultural laboueres and sharecroppers, but in vain.”

Starting from the Agriculture Secretary up to the Chief Secretary and the Chief Minister, nobody is interested to solve the genuine demands in the better interest of farmers of the State, alleged Kumar.

Following the cyclone Phailin, the status of farmers in the 19 calamity-hit districts of the State is worsening further. “We have also urged the Government to provide free seeds and fertilisers to all farmers affected by the Phailin and subsequent floods for ensuing Rabi crop,” said Kumar.
