Farmer suicide, ration card row Congress main agenda

With the Assembly session beginning from Tuesday, Opposition parties, the Congress and BJP, have chalked out plans to take on the ruling BJD over a host of issues, including drought, farmers’ suicide and Food Security card distribution irregularities.

On the other hand, the BJD has decided to raise the Polavaram issue and Central negligence towards the State during the session.

While the BJP held its legislature Party meeting on Sunday and announced to demand a Whitepaper from the Government on drought and farmer suicide issue, the Congress legislature Party met in the Assembly premises on Monday and decided to raise drought, farmers’ suicide and irregularities in the ration card distribution under the Food Security Act.”Congress would raise drought issue and demand that the Government make its stand clear over the deaths of farmers. Similarly, irregularities in Food Security card distribution will be raised,” said leader of Opposition Narasingha Mishra.

He too stated that Congress would raise education, health and labour issues. “Education system and health services are out of reach of the people. Massive exodus of migrant labourers from Odisha to the neighbouring States has emerged as a major problem during this Government and unemployment problem is at its peak,” said Mishra.

After BJDlP meeting CM Patnaik said the Government will discuss all issues raised by the Opposition. “During this session, we will take up a number of issues like the Central Government giving virtually non-existent amount of funds for irrigation projects which have come down substantially for funding of many other projects,” Patnaik said.
