Farmer suicide: Cong urges Guv for judicial probe

Published on:

The Congress on Wednesday submitted a memorandum to Governor Dr SC Jamir urging him to direct the Government for a judicial probe into Khainu (Hadu) Bagarty’s suicide case and pay `10 lakh to families of each farmer who has committed suicide due to crop loss and loan burden during the last 10 years.

“While Khainu’s wife has told the Media that no Government met her after her husband committed suicide, Agriculture Minister Pradeep Maharathy recently informed the State Assembly that Khainu committed suicide due to a family quarrel and not due to crop loss and loan burden. This indicates that the Minister submitted a wrong information in the House,” pointed out PCC farmer cell president Amiya Pattanayak.

He said due to unavailability of electricity, Hadu could not get irrigation facility in his land. He had taken a loan of Rs 18,000 from the local Cooperative Society and other loans from the moneylenders and invested the same for cultivation in two acres of land. However, he lost his crops due to lack of irrigation and ended his life under loan burden pressure.
