Farmer ends life over crop loss

A farmer ended his life by consuming poison over alleged crop loss at Mudalsar under the Larambha police station in Balangir district on Sunday.

The deceased was identified as Santosh Jena. He had grown paddy and pulses on four acres of land with money borrowed from others.

His family members said that since the paddy and green grams were damaged in pest attacks, he was in mental distress. Paying off the loans was something he was always worried about.

Santosh was crest-fallen to see the damaged paddy in the field and there itself he consumed poison. He was admitted to the Patana hospital.

Later at night, he died while he was being shifted to the Bhima Bhoi Medical College Hospital in a critical condition.

On being informed, police recovered the body and sent it for postmortem.
