FARD Secy bats for new ADRI diagnostic lab

Published on:

Fisheries and Animal Resources Development (FARD) Secretary Bishnupada Sethi has asked the authorities to prepare themselves to set up a new Disease Diagnostic laboratory (DDl) at the Animal Disease Research Institute (ADRI).

Sethi asked the authorities while he was reviewing the performance of ADRI, the premier referral laboratory of the Department of Fisheries and Animal Resources Development (DoFARD).

With the performance of the ADRI is on a higher scale, Sethi felt the need of an ultra modern lab to take care the emerging situation. ADRI, Phulnakhara, was set up way back in 1991 to control existing, emerging as well as exotic infectious and contagious diseases of animals and birds having economic and zoonotic importance.

According to review, there is a remarkable increase in examination of pathological samples at ADRI. ADRI examined 23,910 pathological samples during 2015-16, which is 12 per cent higher as compared to 2014-15.

In order to keep pace with future intricacies accompanied by changing pathologies of causative organisms due to gradual change in environment followed by change in manifestation of various diseases, it is needed to go for such a laboratory, experts pointed out.

Once the proposal receives the green signal of the State Government, a Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be prepared with the support of a consultant for posing for financial support.

ADRI is making a move to start Theileria and Anthrax Control Programme as it is now raising concern among the farmers.

According to review, it has come to the fore that the ADRI is taking up regular and active surveillance of livestock and poultry diseases in the field. The institute is coordinating with the District Diagnostic laboratories (DDl)s, Clinical Investigation laboratory (CIl)s at the district and regional level and providing technical support for these institutions.

So taking the performance of ADRI, the institution has been honoured in the all India level.

During 2015-16, All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Animal Disease Monitoring and Surveillance (ADMAS) Odisha Centre received second best centre for the period 2014-15.

For the first time screening test of 1,725 poultry serum samples of avian influenza has been made at ADRI at the newly established BSlII laboratory at ADRI. Earlier all these tests were done outside the State and were taking a lot of time to get the results.
