Regional Museum of Natural History Interpreter Dr Siba Prasad Parida and wildlife expert Micheal Peter visited the Chinchiri mouth to see the endangered dead fin whale on Saturday. The carcass of the whale washed ashore at Chinchiri of Kendrapada district, Rajnagar Mangrove and Wildlife Division DFO Bimal Prasanna Acharya informed.
Acharya said bad odour has been coming from the decomposed body of the endangered whale within a distance of 50 meter from the carcass and the head to abdomen part was destroyed.
Though the carcass was spotted on Saturday at the Chinchiri mouth, it seemed the whale might have been died about a month back, he added.
It has not been decided whether the skeleton of the dead whale is going to be preserved or not. A decision in this regard would be taken after the forest department’s discussion with the Principal Chief Conservator of Forest, official sources informed.
