Eunuch menace in train: NHRC seeks ATR

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought an Action-taken report (ATR) from the Railway Board Chairman and the Director General of Police of Gujurat over death by stabbing by eunuchs in Jabalpur-Somnath Express near Nadiad.

Petitioner Radhakanta Tripathy alleged that due to failure of railway officials to handle the menace created by eunuchs who use force while begging inside trains, the incident took place. The passengers of Odisha bound trains suffer from the problems mostly, he pointed out.

On first Sunday of November last, two eunuchs stabbed a man on train for being resisted of extracting Rs100. The deceased was Mahervan Devipujak (30), a resident of Ujjain. The trouble erupted when the two eunuchs demanded Rs 100 from Devipujak who refused to pay.

Tripathy stated that eunuch problem which used to be very common especially in north India, now has spread to other parts. He demanded that police should protect the passengers from such nuisance and legal action should be initiated against forced alms.

Citing that the situation is horrible in trains like Purusottam Express and Neelanchal Express etc, he requested the NHRC to investigate the case and direct the Railway authorities to take steps to control the menace.
