The EOW arrested Majhi after a probe based on a written allegation of Jatindra Nath Sarangi, Regional Manager, Odisha Gramya Bank, Cuttack against the accused for embezzling Rs 1.15 crore by committing forgery in connivance with others.

Investigation of the case revealed that Majhi during his tenure as Cashier of Odisha Gramya Bank, Pahanga Branch from May 24, 2021 to May 19, 2022 and as Cashier of Binishpur Branch from May 20, 2022 to May 23, 2022 misappropriated the money by not depositing the cash received from customers in their respective accounts although he used to issue the receipt counterfoils to the customers.

Further, he was illegally diverting the money from the accounts of the SHGs to his personal and other accounts as well and was misappropriating the same. He also issued ATM cards in respect of the accounts of the bank customers without their knowledge and was using the same ATM cards for banking transactions from the said accounts thereby misappropriating the customers’ money deposited with the bank, an EOW release said.

The total amount misappropriated by Majhi comes to around Rs.1.15 crore. The accused in conspiracy with others forged the bank documents and was using those as genuine.

Majhi was absconding after his suspension. Incriminating materials like ATM cards of the customers have been seized from his possession. Further investigation of the case was on, said EOW SP Dilip Tripathy.
