District Collector Balwant Singh talked to the headmasters of the schools at length over the preparedness of reopening of schools in Puri district.
Major discussions were made regarding providing proper environment for children to study, maintaining hygienic conditions, repair and maintenance of infrastructure, etc.
Notably, most of the schools in the cyclone Fani-affected Puri district were severely damaged. The headmasters of all schools were earlier directed to ensure presence of all teachers, including lady teachers, and other employees.
The headmasters were also asked to examine the situation of their respective schools and clean the compound with the help of the local BDO, if necessary. They have also been asked to allow operation of JCBs if required.
While OFDC has cut down the damaged trees, clearance of these trees are to be done in many cases, which are being looked into, said sources.
The headmasters were also urged to call meeting of the School Management Committee as well as meeting of the alumni to take their advice and help. Wherever the school buildings were completely damaged, the headmasters were asked to make alternative arrangements and temporarily shift the students of such schools to the nearest schools which would be in suitable conditions.
As per an estimate, over 7,000 schools in 14 districts are severely damaged in the cyclone that wreaked havoc on May 3. The asbestos and tin roofs of several schools have been blown away and there is even no place to seat for the students. A whooping Rs 400 crore will be required to repair the damaged buildings of 14 districts, sources added.
