There is a no doubt “Jallikattu”, which means taming of bulls, is a dangerous sport. The bulls involved are never ethically treated. Rather, they are cruelly dealt with, said Freethough Party of India (FPI).
They are “intoxicated”. The tail of each bull is bitten to make the animal angry. There is also the apprehension of loss of life or fear of grievous injuries inflicted on the youths playing the sport. Hence, the sport should be done away with, FPI said in a release.
The champions of Tamil culture say without the bull taming sport, there would be no adequate rain fall. The rain god would be angry and there would be no good harvest. The bulls would lose their vigour and masculinity and consequently the quality of cow’s milk would fall.
For fear of ostracisation or attack, Tamil film stars, writers and sports celebrities have lent their support to the agitators assembled at the Marina beach demanding continuation of the sport. The DMK held hunger strike and staged “Railroko”. The AIADMK Government bowed as well as the Centre. The Supreme Court’s ban on Jallikattu still stands.
But the Tamil sentiment prevailed upon the leaders in Chennai and New Delhi. An ordinance allowing Jallikattu has been promulgated. But, the leaders should have educated and motivated the people to love life and stop causing cruelty to animals.
They should have taught to honour the judgment of the Supreme Court. Cruelty should be avoided all over India. That should be the motto of the Indian people and their leaders, asserted FPI general secretary B Ramchandra CST Voltaire.
