The General Administration (GA) Department, the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) and the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) in a joint eviction drive took possession of a patch of land in the heart of the city near AG Square.
The vacated land of around one acre would be used to construct the proposed Bhubaneswar Urban Museum, said official sources.
The eviction drive which started at around 6 am led to demolition of the Indira English Medium School and the Nehru Yuva Kendra buildings. One platoon of police force was deployed to ward off any untoward incident. The State Government took possession of the one-acre land after 30 long years of legal battle.
“It was after 30 years that the Government succeeded in acquiring this piece of land. It will be used for construction of the Bhubaneswar Urban Museum,” said BMC Joint Commissioner Ramakant Sethi.
The demolition was on till afternoon and there was no information about any kind of protest from the encroachers.
