Demanding payment of arrears and reopening of the Nayagarh Sugar Mill, employees of the mill and members of the Akhu Chasi Mahasangh and Krushak Sangh under the banner of the Nayagarh Chinikala Banchao Kriyanusthana Committee resorted to civil disobedience in front of the Nayagarh Collectorate here on Monday.
The agitators also locked up the main gate of the Collector office. Besides, they have also resorted to an indefinite fast in front of the Collectorate since August 17 demanding fulfillment of their long-standing demands.
Notably, sugar cane farmers and employees of the Nayagarh Sugar Mill have been agitating since March 4 in protest against the lock-out of the mill by the State Government.
“Despite a series of meeting between representatives of the farmers and employees of the sugar mill with the district administration and the State Government, no concrete step has been taken so far in this regard”, said an employee of the sugar mill. In apprehension of any untoward incident, four platoons of armed police have been deployed in and outside the Collectorate.
