Emergency whistles in disaster kits soon

Bhubaneswar: The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has advised the Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) to include ‘emergency whistles’ as lifesaving equipment for any disaster.

On the advice of the NDMA, OSDMA MD Bishnupada Sethi has asked the officials to provide ‘emergency whistle’ in the kits given to participants in the awareness camps, consultation workshops and training conferences.

An ‘emergency whistle’ is very helpful at times of natural disaster like floods, earthquakes and tornadoes that wipe everything in their ways.

If one is trapped under a fallen building or caught in a house or any other place without any hope to come out, then the whistle can help be the last chance of saving his or her life, said Sethi.

He said rescue teams can’t hear victim’s voice over all the noise made by rescue machines and general chaos but the sharp sound of the special whistle can be heard and perceived easily.

“Emergency whistle can let rescuers know that somebody is beneath the rubble. This equipment work as a two way communication system; rescuers can blow whistle to inform their presence near the debris or the victims can inform the rescuers about his/her plight under debris,” said Sethi.
