A wild elephant trampled a man to death in the Betnoti area under the Baripada Forest Division in Mayurbhanj district on Thursday night.

The deceased person was identified as Puina Dehury, a resident of Kalianal village under the Morada police limits in Maurbhanj.

According to reports, three wild elephants went on a rampage at the village creating panic among people on Thursday night. One of the animals targeted the house of Puina while he and his two daughters were sleeping. On learning that elephants were coming towards their house, the two girls managed to run away. However, a tusker dragged their father and trampled him to death.

Locals alleged that the Forest Department had not given any prior notice about the elephants for which such an incident happened.

On receiving information, Betnoti Forest Range officials and local police reached the spot and took the body to the PRM Medical College and Hospital for postmortem.
