Carcasses of a female elephant and a newborn calf were found by forest officials near Kuliapala village under the Kalapata Reserve Forest in Keonjhar district on Monday.
The cause of the death of two elephants was yet to be ascertained.
According to reports, forest officials launched a search operation and found the decomposed bodies of the two elephants after locals complained of foul odour coming from the forest area.
On getting information, Keonjhar DFO Dhamdhere Dhanraj Hanumant and other forest officials reached the spot.
Although the cause of the death of the elephants was yet to be ascertained, it was suspected that the female elephant might have died after giving birth to her baby in the forest.
It was assumed that both mother and newborn elephants died within 10 to 15 days.
