Elderly couple assaulted; house looted in city

Published on:

Of late, senior citizens have become soft targets for looters in this Smart City. To make matters worse, the Commissionerate Police Senior Citizens’ Cell hasn’t been of much help.

In a glaring example, miscreants entered into the house a former MCL official Braja Kishore Mohanty’s house at Gayatri Nagar in Sisupalgarh under the Dhauli police station on Monday night and looted gold, silver ornaments and cash worth Rs 3 lakh.

The armed miscreants assaulted Mohanty with an iron rod and threatened his wife Pusphlata to remain silent.

Then they rummaged through the house and looted all cash, gold ornaments.

They also snatched a gold chain from Pusphalata and locked the house from outside fleeing from the spot. Later, the couple was rescued by a PCR van which was patrolling the area after they raised an alarm.

A case in connection with the incident has been registered with the Dhauli police and further investigations are on.

The incident has again raised questions on the safety of senior citizens particularly in the city outskirts where police visibility is negligible.

Recently a number of incidents have been reported from different parts of the city, where miscreants have looted elderly people after assaulting them.

Former senior police officials said the police should identify the secluded colonies and intensify road blocks and patrolling to curb such incidents.
