Duped chit investors hold huge rally in Cuttack

Investors, who have been duped by several chit fund companies in the State, staged a massive rally here on Friday and later gathered near the office of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry probing into the mega chit fund scam.

A delegation of the investors' forum then submitted a memorandum to the commission headed by retired judge of Odisha High Court MM Das. The memorandum spelt out a four-point charter of demands and Justice Das assured the delegates that the commission would take an appropriate decision after going through the legal aspects of the demands.

The investors, under the banner of the Arthika Sanstha Manankadwara Kshyatigrasta Milita Manch, are demanding immediate identification of the investors and publication of their names at the tehsil level, arrest and confiscation of properties of the chit fund company promoters, return of the investors' money and stopping of collection of premiums by banning the chit fund companies.

The judicial commission set up in July 2013 has received over ten lakh affidavits, of which over eight lakh are found to be valid. Efforts are on to digitalise the affidavits for smooth functioning of the commission, said a source, adding that the affidavits are segregated to identify the investors in accordance to the companies in which they have invested.

Nearly 50 financial companies setting up branches across the State have duped crores of money from poor and innocent investors. While the CBI is currently investigating into the money trail aspect of the chit fund companies following the Supreme Court's orders, the State Government setting up the judicial commission of inquiry has also formed a corpus fund of Rs 300 crore to return the investors' money.
