After repeated pleas failed to move the local administration take steps for cleaning a bridge that remained filled up with garbage and filth, a few senior citizens of Rajnagar block undertook a mission to do it themselves.
The bridge located over the Hansua river is said to be the only source of communication from Rajnagar to other areas. But it remained in unhygienic condition as heaps of garbage, including cow dung, lay on the bridge. Since the bridge became a place for night halt of bullocks, they discharged dung on it making it filthy. Besides, the commuters faced a lot of inconveniences due to the bovines and filth on the bridge. Most often, the senior citizens urged the RD department authorities to take steps for cleaning the bridge, but in vain.
Consequently, a few senior citizens led by Krupasindhu Samal, Abhaya Baba, Akhaya Kumar Nayak and Bichitra Kumar Mallick on Saturday cleaned the heaps of cow dung and garbage laying on the bridge. It took them four hours to complete the work.
“As the Durga puja is round the corner, the garbage on the bridge needed to be lifted. When the local administration did not respond to our pleas, we resolved to do it and keep the bridge clean,” said a senior citizen of the locality Krupasindhu Samal.
