There is no proposal to make Odisha a State of total prohibition, and making such a move is not practical at all.
Excise Minister Dr Damodar Rout said this in the State Assembly in response to a question of BJD MlA Debasis Nayak on Wednesday.
“Total prohibition attempt is not practical at all. The Government intends to supply quality liquor from legal sources to people who are already habituated to taking liquors,” the Minister said.
He claimed that the Excise Department has been conducting raids based on intelligence reports to check illegal trading of liquor and other intoxicant items.
During the current fiscal till December 31, 2016, a total of 1,35,945 litre of ID liquor, 1,11,764 kg of wash, 10,79,686 kg of MF wash, 6,572 litre of IMFl, 7,578 litre of beer, 13,797 litre of OS, 10,836 litre of CS, 11,215.901 kg of ganja, 6,472.85 kg of bhang, one kg of opium and 729.900 grams of brown sugar were seized by the department, informed the Minister.
