The Haldipadia slum under the laxmisagar police station is fast turning into a drugs hub in the city. Though the police have made some seizures and arrested a number of people, the illegal trade continues unabated.
Excise Department sleuths arrested two drug peddlers from the Haladipadia slum on Friday and seized brown sugar weighing 100 grams from their possession.
While one of the arrestees was identified as Bidhan Chandra Jayadhara, the identity of the other was yet to be ascertained.
The raid was conducted on a tipoff that a drug consignment had reached the area. A team of four officials along with the help of local police raided a house located in the slum and nabbed two persons from the spot. After conducting a search in the house the officials found around 100 grams of brown sugar kept in separate packets and seized them.
Excise sources said the seized drug reached the city from Kolkata via Jaleshwar in Baleswar district. Informing on the modus operandi of the drug traders, they added that brown sugar is being sold widely in various slum areas in the city and separate teams have been formed to conduct raids.
