The recent tragic deaths by drowning of three students at the Jahania beach of Astaranga block in Puri district was a great shocking tragedy, which could have been easily prevented. It is so unfortunate that similar accidental drowning deaths have been occurring frequently. It’s sad that the Government hardly ever takes steps to prevent them by deploying lifeguards at all tourist and picnic places and undertaking awareness campaigns targeting young students and youths including appropriate use of social media.
Swimming and taking bath in rivers, beaches and local ponds are enjoyable, but they sometimes turn tragic as young people ignore the dangers of shallow water currents and don’t take precautions. Drowning deaths bring lifelong trauma to the affected families.
