The Odisha Drivers’ Mahasangha on Sunday warned the State Government saying that it would again resort to agitation if its demands are not met before July 30.
The Mahasangha strongly resented the dillydallying and apathetic attitude of the government in keeping its commitment previously given to the outfit. “Despite repeated agitations, the Government is not paying any heed to our demands,” said association president Prasanta Muduli.
Notably, a written commitment was earlier given by the government with regard to the demands following a ‘Quit Steering’ protest held by the drivers on March 15. A board was to be constituted for devising methods for the purpose of meeting the demands, which is allegedly being delayed.
“About 45 drivers died in a month, but the insurance benefits have not been given to their families. Our 10-point charter of demands must be met in a week,” Muduli reiterated.
Worth mentioning, the Chief Secretary had held a discussion with the association and a decision was taken to fulfil the demands in three months. The agitators then agreed to withdraw the strike.
The drivers had staged demonstrations in the past at various places in the State stopping the movement of commercial vehicles on National Highways.
Formation of a welfare fund, death benefits and social security including pension after 60 years of age are among the 10-point charter of demands of the drivers’ association.
