Populations in developing countries are particularly vulnerable to the spread of Covid-19. Across the globe, borders have shut, national emergencies have been declared and restrictions in the movement of people and goods have been enforced.
Amidst these challenging conditions, working to deliver positive changes, promoting sustainable consumption and maintaining a sense of community is more essential than ever.
Mention may be made that Green Action Week (GAW) is observed each year from September 28 to October 4. This is a global people’s campaign to promote sustainable consumption. In Green Action Week, the Youth for Social Development (YSD) on Wednesday has started, with support of Swedish Society for Nature Conservation (SSNC) and CUTS International, a month-long campaign on the theme “Sharing Community”.
A large number of volunteers have begun making citizens aware on ‘sharing community’, its multiple benefits and practices with examples in Brahmapur and created awareness on preventive measures like social distancing, mask use and frequent hand washing.
YSD coordinator Chandan Kumar Sahu said citizens were provided with a leaflet detailing with concept, benefits and practices and signed pledge for collaborative consumption. Over 300 people signed the pledge.
This campaign would include activities like public awareness camps, college/university-level webinars and workshops on sharing community with local government, civil society, media and citizen of Brahmapur.Due to the pandemic situation, there is a 70-80% increase in the production and consumption of organic products as consumers consider immunity as an ammunition to fight virus. Sahu said.
