Dreaded criminal Jagannath Nayak alias Sana Jaga was injured in a police encounter on the Mahaguda-Mujaguda road under the Bhanjanagar police limits in Ganjam district on Sunday morning.
Jaga along with his three associates was travelling by motorcycles when the cops intercepted them at around 7.30 am. However, the criminals hurled a crude bomb and opened fire at the policemen. In retaliation, police returned fire in which Jaga sustained bullet injury on his left leg. Three policemen also sustained minor injuries in the incident.
About 15 bombs, a pistol, live bullets and two bikes were seized from the possession of Jaga and his aides.
“Jaga’s three aides have also been detained for further questioning. He used to commit crime in a very violent manner. He was active in Ganjam and Kandhamal districts,” said Ganjam SP Asish Singh.
At least 13 cases are registered against Jaga at various police stations in Ganjam and Kandhamal, he added.
Jaga hails from Badadanda Sahi in the Bhejiput area in Ganjam districtand was in the most wanted list for his involvement in loot, murder and other criminal activities.
Notably, at least 13 encounters have taken place in last three months in Ganjam since the joining of Asish Singh as SP. Singh has also been given additional charge of Brahmapur SP.
